As we speak, there are approximately 1,400 wildfires raging in Northern California — destroying homes, businesses and public landmarks. So far some 364,600 acres, or almost 570 square miles, have already burned. President Bush declared a state of emergency on Saturday.
The good news is that the fires don’t appear to be growing in size; the bad news is that forecast models show more dry thunderstorms on the horizon; lightning strikes are how most of these fires start.
I happened to be driving through Northern California around the time these fires began and saw a couple of them burning — one during the day and the other at night.
For those who haven’t seen something like this in person, you can scarcely imagine what a humbling and heartbreaking sight it is to see entire stretches of countryside set ablaze, and then realize that in many cases the only recourse (in the event that containment is not possible) is to let the fires burn themselves out.
State officials report that these wildfires have resulted in serious injuries to some of the 19,500 firefighters and others who are currently battling the blazes.
Meaningful Distraction will be praying for a speedy recovery for those brave Americans and the families that have been impacted.
