Pay attention folks: This is how you play big-league politics.
“Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Wednesday he is suspending his campaign, and he is asking Democratic rival Barack Obama to join him in trying to postpone Friday night’s debate so that both candidates and both parties can focus on a solution to the Wall Street crisis.”
Say you’re John McCain for a minute. You’ve been taking it from all sides this week and now a new poll shows that Independent voters trust Obama with the economy over you by 14 points…
Ask yourself: what do you do in that situation?
Whatever it is, it has to be something BIG… something DRAMATIC… something that, most importantly, CHANGES THE FOCUS…
I know!! You can run back to your comfort zone in Washington suspend your campaign and try to spin it like you’re the responsible one in this situation… simultaneously putting pressure on Obama to “follow” your lead.
It’s clever, I’ll admit. But here’s the problem:
The responsible man would stand up and tell the truth about what’s going on with his campaign. The responsible man would stop lying to the American people and treating the second female candidate for VP in history like she’s incompetent. The responsible man would be accountable and hold himself to a higher standard, but that’s simply not John McCain.
Suspending his campaign is pure politics: “change the story, change the lede“…
But, credit where it’s due, he needing something like this… so in that sense: this is smart politics.
