Symbol of capitalistic greed McDonald’s is really living up to it’s reputation as an evil empire. They’re no longer merely all about moving in on the little guy, or clogging your arteries with fry grease, or making kids big chunkers, but are also now turning on their employees.
Get this-A McDonald’s employee who stepped in to prevent a man from beating up a woman IN A MCDONALD’S restaurant, was shot multiple times. Miraculously he survived, but wound up with $300k in medical bills. Mickey D’s, who pays minimum wage, won’t pay up for this hero, because his injuries “did not arise out of or within the course and scope of his employment.”
The man, Nigel Haskett, who is only 22 years old and should be receiving massive praise for trying to save someone from getting Chris Browned, has filed a workers’ comp complaint.
The trial is in court and McDonald’s shows no signs of compromise. There defense is that during orientation workers are told to stay away from situations and just call 911, or in layman’s terms watch as a women gets beat up in front of your eyes.
Horrible public relations move for the conglomerate, not to mention just morally and ethically rephrensible. McDonald’s gets a fail in existence.

I’m not sure the corporation is to blame. Is this a corporate store, or a franchisee? Is the corporation fighting, or the store’s owner? And how can McDonald’s claim copyright infringement and have the security video pulled form Youtube?

PS. Twin City Bank in Little Rock is taking donations to help with Nigel Haskett’s medical bills.
“This act of heroism is something we try not to encourage for all the obvious reasons,” said store owner Ray Nosler.

That make me sick to my stomach to just read the story! It is so pathetic so see that is how low McDonald has reached! I guess they think “Who gives a $@*%” as they believe that people will still buy their nasty McBurgers! I think Wendys or BurgerKing should quickly to pay for the Guy’s Compensation and Offer him a job! That would for sure 100% increase their sales dramatically! Imagine that flow of Mcdonalds customers going to them instead!!

I will never eat at a McDonalds again, nor will anyone I am with. These people are truly evil.

One more thing, I will do my part, I promise to NEVER eat at Mcdonalds again. This I will do. I simply find the WENDYS and BURGER KING are so much better anyway, but Mc Donalds doesn’t deserve to be in business.

Wow, great job on not sounding biased. You start your little bitch-fest with how much you hate McDonalds. NEWSFLASH! It’s not McDonald’s fault anybody is fat. They are not forcing little piggy kids to stuff their little piggy mouths with big macs. With that said, why the hell should McDonalds have to pay? Did they shoot the guy? Did they ask him to put his life on the line? No. He did it of his own free will. McDonalds probably has a policy forbidding employees from doing such acts so that they don’t get injured or killed.

Hi Marc. Thanks for reading. Can you please point out to me where I promise that this site will be run without bias? Cuz, I don’t ever claim that it isn’t. As for fat kids and fast food-maybe Ronald and the McBurgler aren;t shoving it down there throats at knife point, but the copany has marketed towards children for years with it’s clown mascot, birthday parties in store, playgrounds, etc. you should find this recent study interesting - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUKTRE5013LU20090102. As for McDonald’s shot the guy-clearly not, but they are telling him to stand by while someone gets shot in the store. I’m not saying that rthey should change their policy. There is something called good will benefit that has to do with worker’s comp. It states, “that if an employee is injured while involved in an activity that benefits the employer, while in the course of employment, then that employee has a workers’ compensation claim.” http://anti-union.blogspot.com/2009/02/mcdonalds-hero-getting-screwed-by.html. Plus, you have to admit that it’s in their best interest from a pr perspective at the very least. His medical bills are nothing to them.

Did Vulture Capitalism breed such a society or did a terrible people breed Vulture Capitalism? By Capitalistic, government enforced law, the employee was obliged to protect the store and its property only. By humane evaluation of a situation, he is a hero! He gets nothing from Vulture Capitalists, in Canada he gets free, government paid, medical care but in the strictly Capitalist American system he gets the shaft for foolishness - You American folks must stop bail outs of banks and corporations - corporate socialism - and start a Universal Health care system, no matter how socialist it appears, it is more humane and that’s what counts!

any contact information to notify McD about their unethical treatment of a hero that stood up to a woman being beaten. I would love to write / complain / boycott / but want to let the McD (jerks) know I am pissed and wont spend my money with a greedy callous corporation. I live in Portland Oregon. But this type of treatment is uncalled for no matter where we live. So any information is appreciated in regards who to contact

So, just to follow your reasoning, if this incident had occurred on a city street, then the taxpayers in that city would be liable for damages?
Don’t be an idiot, Not only was this NOT part of his duties AS AN EMPLOYEE, he was specifically instructed NOT to intervene and to call 911.
Undoubtedly, he acted heroically. However, this has as little to do with McDonalds as your article has to do with any form of logical thought.

Here is what I wrote to McDonald’s via the Contact-Us link provided.
Dear McDonald’s,
I really think you should change your staunched position of not helping your Little Rock, AR, employee, Nigel Haskett. You should by all means, pay for the medical costs he incurred while on the job. By not doing so, it really makes you look, really bad.
On one hand you could contend that your ole faithful employee, do gooder and now hero, Nigel, instigated his own gunshot wounds by intervening in a domestic dispute, that would have been better handled by local law enforcement. (But they weren’t there, now were they?)
I suppose he could have cowered behind the counter, called 911, and hoped that everyone else in harms way was able to acquire adequate cover? While the insane gun toting maniac beat his female accompaniment to a bloody pulp! (Who is to say that she wasn’t a hostage?)
Do you have any policy and training for your employees in the event of such adverse and insane situations?
Maybe Mr. Haskett should have walked up with a couple of free Big Mac meals, as an offering to calm the enraged beast? Of course with those fries of yours, that will keep, seemingly forever. Their consumption may have preserved the madness of the madman indefinitely, which would have gave the police ample time to arrive! But what could have happened in the meantime? (Sometimes soothing music works in calming the ferocious beast!)
Did you take into consideration that a fellow customer could have intervened in the altercation instead? And then had it escalate into a hostage situation? Or even worse, a mass murder? If my memory severs me correctly, you already have the San Ysidro McDonald’s massacre that occurred on July 18, 1984, on your hands.
It is my contention and suggestion, that you not only pay for your employee Nigel Haskett’s medical expenses. But that you should also have a ceremony for him, celebrating and commemorating his bravery and heroism. As well as offering him a career advancement opportunity, by joining your management team. And maybe a little extra on the side, to help him get by, while he rehabilitates.
Anything less is simply unacceptable. Personally I will be taking my fast food patronage elsewhere until I hear of an acceptable resolution. And I will suggest the same to my faithful congregation.
Come on McDonald’s, do the right thing! You are a multi-conglomerate corporation with BILLIONS SERVED. What is less than a million, to aid a faithful and heroic employee who did the right thing? Not to mention how much further it will go with your PR and CR campaigns.
In the long run I would venture to say it would cost you less, if you are looking to the bottom line and profit dollar.
Give me a break. And moreover, give Nigel Haskell a break!
Thank you for listening.

This is awful! McDonalds have become rich giants all over the world selling mostly foods that are bad for you. Too bad they feel no responsibility for this young man who exemplified so much courage.
